Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease. Today the rapid advent of technology has given us lives of comfort and ease. Summers are cooled with air conditioning, winters are warmed with heaters. Commutes have become and continue to become faster and easier. Just pause for a moment and reflect into the times gone by during our childhood and even our parent’s younger days. Food in those days meant seasonal vegetables, fruits, and fish. All fresh bought from the market. These would be cleaned, chopped and cooked by ma using physically intensive cooking methods. Even the simple task of eating required time and physical effort in those days.
Fast forward to today. We usually have a sabzi wala coming to our doorsteps or a domestic help who carries our shopping list to the market to procure groceries. For those who still make the effort it’s usually an Air-conditioned supermart with a trolley in hand. Food today means processed, chopped, peeled, frozen, easy to cook, food on the go. “In GD Hospital and Diabetes Institute we have pledged to ‘Care for Life.’ So we want to tell everyone – Haato Bangla Haato – Walk Bengal Walk. It is our belief that great evils can be dispelled with a single step just as the Mahatma showed us decades ago with the Dandi march.
Haato Bangla Haato was conceived three years ago as an awareness campaign to commemorate the event of World Diabetes Day which is celebrated internationally on 14th November. The objective of this is simple yet relevant. To initiate the simple step of taking one step at a time towards a healthy tomorrow. Walking is our greatest tool in this fight to eradicate diabetes from our lives. It is imperative to create awareness in all age groups and sections of the society that the simple task of walking is the most essential antidote to this debilitating disease. The campaign has now gained added momentum after GD Hospital and Diabetes Institute received “Best Public Initiative of the Year” award by the World Health and Wellness Congress this March in Taj Lands’ End Hotel, Mumbai,” Ms. Musrefa Hossain, CEO, GD Hospital & Diabetic Institute says. In the past, the event has been supported by several eminent personalities like Former Indian Cricket team skipper Saurav Ganguly, Parambrata Chatterjee, Dev, Rituparna Sengupta, Gargee Raychoudhury, Kanchan Mallick, Nipobithi, Sambaran Banerjee, Arjun Chakraborty, singer Tirtha Bhattacharaya and many more.
The walkathon had a total attendance of more than 1200 walkers last year which included doctors, nurses, teachers, school children, special needs children, parents, grandparents- All joined hands for a common cause. Each of the people in attendance was either a diabetic or had a loved one who was suffering from diabetes. This year the walkathon will reach to other districts also. Same event will take place in Buniadpur of South Dinajpur on 24th November and Aurangabad of Murshidabad on 25th November for a greater inclusive growth. Apart from this walkathon the hospital will also launch a ‘Diabetes Checkup on Wheels’ campaign across the city. This mobile Diabetes Care vehicle will move around the city and will conduct free tests, vitals scan and will try to create awareness in detecting, managing and eliminating diabetes.
