Anusree Jana, Kolkata : Hima Das one of the brightest star in our Milkyway but we do not acknowledge her to the extent we should, even after she is shining bright with her consecutive achievements in the international arena as one of the best sprinters India has to offer till today’s date.
Her past achievements in Asian games2018 and in U-20 Championship 2018 as a winning sprinter in several events that marked her as a rising star in the national athletic circle has been somewhat pushed to the background. Just a reminder, in Asian Games 2018 she won a gold madel for 4×400 meters relay and two silver for 400 m race and mixed 4×400meters relay respectively. Also, she has a gold in her bag from U-20 World Championship 2018.
Hima’s success as an outstanding athlete is commended by one of the highest awards in India’s sports world, Arjun Award in 2018. Even her appointment as Youth Ambassador of UNICEF ( United Nation’s Children Fund) and she is the first-ever Indian to be ever appointed for the role, is somewhat forgotten by the people of India. But she remains ever the humble girl from our neighbor and her response to this enormous honor is a proof of that-“I’m honored to be chosen as @UNICEF India’s Youth Ambassador, and I hope I will be able to inspire more children to follow their dreams” — Hima Das.
The most recent addition of success to her name is her four consecutive gold streak in international track as a sprinter and all four of the success is achieved in just a fortnight. The first one is for 200m race in Pozan Athletic Grand Pix, Poland. Second and third gold are for 200 m race in Kutno Athletics Meet, Poland and kladno Athletics Meet, Czech Republic respectively. Her fourth gold is for 200m race in Tabor Athletics Meet, Czech Republic.
In between 2nd July 2019 to 17th July 2019 Hima, our Dhing Express created a significant buzz and brought a lot of glory for our country. But alas! Indian mass media and the majority of Indian people either are too hyped about the loss of the Indian Cricket team in the world cup or just plain ignorant or disinterested.
The problem with us Indian is that we often gripe about our lack of success in sports except for cricket. But when we do have such brilliant success brought to us by our very own golden girl, Hima. It seems there is an almost offending and somewhat saddening lack of appreciation from general mass and other authority or significant figures. The lack of sufficient media coverage made her success an obsolete event not a bright moment of glory for us Indians.
Our girl Hima is not only lost in the chasing of her dream to the horizon but she takes notice of her fellow people. Hima who is from Assam has revealed to have not only donating half of her salary to the chief minister’s relief fund for the big flood that has wrecked Assam, she also urged other big corporates and individuals to do so.
Hima is not only an inspiration in sports but also as a human being with lionheart or a lioness heart in this case.
