26 year old female patient Mrs.Priyanka Bhowmick, presented with a swelling in the middle of her neck which she had noticed 2 months ago. As the swelling was gradually increasing in size she got an FNAC done, which showed that she had papillary carcinoma thyroid gland. She was informed that surgery is mandatory in the treatment of this disease.
This being said, the challenge posed in front of our ENT team was that the patient is 22 weeks pregnant , thus making any surgery very critical in terms of wellness of both, the mother and baby. We had an option of waiting for her to deliver the baby and then perform the thyroid surgery; in which case the prognosis of the disease would be worsened. All risks involved were explained to the family, as this was a rare situation wherein a major surgery was to be performed on a pregnant lady. With a green signal from the gynecology and anesthesia teams, we decided to go ahead with a total thyroidectomy with neck dissection.
ENT Surgeons, Dr.Sanjoy Kumar Ghosh, Dr.Anshu Chopra and Dr.Madhurima Banerjee operated on this patient on 23rd of February. Anesthetist was Dr.Sanchita Saha. Patient and her in-utero baby tolerated the procedure very well, thus saving two precious lives.
Needless to say, the patient and her family are very happy, she is recovering speedily, and with the help of able gynecology team she is expecting to deliver a healthy baby in 3 months.
