Unexpected plight or careful ignorance land many children’s life in the four walls of an orphanage but the talent of each individual in this planet finds its own way to shine through, no matter even if it is from the damp ground of poverty or haplessness. The 6th State Level Sports and Cultural Meet, hosted by Mass Education Extension & Library Services Department, Govt. of West Bengal, was flagged off today at B.D. Auditorium, Salt Lake in the graceful presence of Sri Sujit Bose, Former Cricket Player and Sri. Dr. Nirmal Maji, M.L.A, and other dignitaries from different walks of life.
Total 50 social welfare homes in the state are categorized under State Welfare Homes, Aided Homes and Sponsored Homes. Destitute children within the age group of 6 to 18 years are taken care of in these homes. As the Government bears the entire responsibility of food, lodging and education of these impoverished children, these kids are also encouraged and supported by the Government to take part in athletic events to achieve a healthy student life. State Level Sports and Cultural Meet is an initiative by Mass Education Extension & Library Services Department, Govt. of West Bengal to bring out the areas of talent and interest of kids from different social welfare homes across the state.
Starting from 2014, in the sixth version of the event, like last year the two day event is being organized in a larger prospect. Apart from hosting a sports competition among the inmates of child welfare homes, a cultural programme has also been scheduled. Around 850 children from 50 such institutions have been enlisted for the State Level Sports and Cultural Meet. The cultural program included drawing competition, group dances and one act play, where 140 children participated. Winners of each game were felicitated with awards. 720 children will participate on the sports competition the next day, that is on 17thFebruary, 2020 at I. B. Sports Ground, Salt Lake,, where about 34 events will be held including 100-metre dash, 200-metre run, high jump, long jump etc. arranged separately for boys and girls.
“Through the Sports and Cultural Meet, we aim to hone the talent of these children paving their way to take up sports or artistic expertise as a professional course in future. Professional training is given on a regular basis to the resident kids of these social welfare homes to make them prepared for such competition”, Official Statement from Mass Education Extension & Library Services Department, Govt. of West Bengal
