Diabetes is a growing challenge in India with the number of patients getting manifolds in the recent past. It is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce adequate amount of insulin or unable to use to the insulin produced, this condition leads to increased concentration of glucose in the blood, a known as hypoglycaemia. Manipal Hospital undertook an initiative to train the nurses to ensure self-reliance, keeping in mind the theme of World Diabetes Day 2022 âaccess to diabetes educationâ.
The training focussed on the nurses to enhance their abilities to identify the signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia. Nurses from all the wards of the hospital be it ICU, ITU, ER or general ward, were provided a basic knowledge of various types insulin, the types of insulin used at the hospital- their brand names, short- and long-term insulin, the correct methodology to inject insulin to the patients, how to cope up with any emergency condition. The training emphasized the importance of nurses in helping to cope up with diabetes. The session laid stress on hypoglycaemia, how to identify the initial signs, and an awareness was initiated among the nurses so that they can be alert and convey the knowledge to others at the same time. The learning session also stressed on the diet that needs to be prepared for a diabetic patient. The training has proved to be of immense knowledge gaining session for all the nurses and made them ready to tackle any emergency situation.
Dr. Sagarika Mukherjee, Consultant Endocrinology- Diabetes, Manipal Hospital, Salt Lake Kolkata, said, âThere are a large number of nurses at Manipal Hospital looking after all the wards. If the nurses are well trained about the various aspects of hypoglycaemia, its sign and symptoms and immediate step that needs to be taken until a doctor arrive, then it will not only be helpful to the patients but will also be beneficial for the doctors. There is a large section of patients at every ward suffering with diabetes along with other diseases and this doubles the duty of the nurses to take care of the diet of those patients and be alert and cautious. The training programme on the basics of diabetes and hypoglycaemia has enabled the nurses to take immediate steps in the right directionâ.
The training was provided to 70-nurses in three batches in a session of 1-hour each through various chart presentations, power point and other instructive models.
Mr. Arindam Banerjee, Director, Manipal Hospital Salt Lake Kolkata, said, âNurses training programme had been immensely beneficial for them and the doctors as the role of a nurse is indispensable.
