Anusree Jana, Kolkata : Chandrayaan 2, India’s most prestigious and ambitious project to date had a successful liftoff from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh at 2.43 pm this Monday.
ISRO(Indian Space Research Organisation) has some good progress report for Chandrayaan 2’s journey so far. An ISRO official said “The Chandrayaan-2 is in good health. There is no doubt about it. It is moving in the right direction.”
The 3850 kg and 980 crore-budget Chandrayaan 2 has been successfully injected into the orbit of Earth and ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network of Bengaluru has taken control of the spacecraft according to sources from ISRO. And the spacecraft is supposed to perform a few maneuvers that will take it closer to the Moon in a couple of weeks.
This completely domestically designed and produced three-module spacecraft includes an Orbiter, Lander and Rover. The Lander, Vikram is designed to soft-land on the south-pole area of the Moon which is supposed to make India the fourth country in the list to achieve the feat.
Now ISRO officials are searching for a name to mark the place on the lunar surface, Vikram is supposed to land on September 7. “We are looking to name the location Vikram lands at,” Isro chairman K. Sivan told the press and he added that “We are selecting a name, we still have time for that.”
As he said “There is no shortlist of names. We are in the process, we will pick a name.” The name is likely to be announced by Prime Minister Modi. But the important task is to land on the Moon first.
ISRO will not reveal the name till Vikram successfully lands on the Moon but ISRO is confident about the possibility for Vikram to soft-land on the Moon.
