Manipal Hospitals, Salt Lake, Kolkata, India’s second-largest healthcare provider, set another milestone in Bariatric treatment by performing a successful surgery on a Bangladeshi national weighing 172 kg with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 64. The team, led by Dr. Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Consultant, Bariatric & Laparoscopic procedures, completed the procedure successfully in just one hour.
Riya Sinha (name changed), a 30-year-old Bangladeshi woman with no family history of obesity, was brought to Manipal Hospitals with complaints of obesity (weighing 172 kg), sleep apnoea and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease that progressed to cirrhosis.
She was advised to undergo Bariatric laparoscopic surgery. Doctors at the hospital pointed out that Bariatric laparoscopic surgery is safe and helps in gradual weight-loss. In this surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced, as a result of which the eating capacity of the person gets curtailed. Consequently, absorption of food from the intestine is reduced and metabolic rate increased. The surgery also leads to reversal of diabetes, hypertension, polycystic ovarian cancer. It is also known to reverse the chances of various emanating from obesity among women.
Dr. Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Consultant, Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgery at Manipal Hospitals in Kolkata, stated, “Bariatric surgery treats the cause of obesity itself and is a gradual process in the weight-loss journey. There are no negative effects and very little likelihood of gaining weight after therapy. Ms. Sinha weighed 152 kg when she was first brought to us around three months ago. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to drop weight. She was one of the heaviest patients successfully treated at this hospital. She is quite satisfied with the results of the surgery, and is doing well post discharge.”
Ms. Sinha was discharged on the second day after her surgery. And her weight reduction journey, which began with the surgery, has helped her drop 4-5 kg per month over the last 1-1.5 years. This has helped her get back to a healthy weight range. Except for certain vitamin supplements, no medicine has been recommended. Going forward, she will be provided further assistance by the hospital, Dr. Bhattacharya added.
Mr. Arindam Banerjee, Director of Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata, said, “Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata, stands as one of the best hospitals in the eastern region for bariatric surgery, with well-equipped and advanced technologies, special operation theatre, beds, and other equipment. Our hospital’s team of competent and skilled doctors and personnel has been providing the greatest care and end-to-end treatment to patients.
