Welcome to the world of Masala 21, a newly launched Kolkata-based Indian restaurant; as delightful as their brand name. The owners, Ms. Priyadarshini Hakim and Mr. Aditya Jaiswal opened the restaurant with intuition to create an upscale casual dining experience for everyone without burning a hole in their pockets.Â
The two close friends who are the owners of the place wanted to do something in the food and beverage space. When it comes to eating Indian cuisine, the preponderance of Calcuttans either go to a high-end restaurant or an affluent dhaba. One of the nicest things about this restaurant is that it can deliver the essence of wonderful food and beautiful surroundings at a reasonable price.Â
The interior of this place is also quite fascinating. Built on 1100 sq. ft, this place has a seating arrangement of 36 people at once. This place’s interior primarily focuses on contemporary Indian design in a minimalistic style. The floor is covered with black and white checkered tiles with plush green walls, which gives the customers a feel of fine dining. Interestingly, their theme is flavourful spices used in cooking appetizing dishes, and the interior also has some aesthetically designed masala racks and photographs of spices. These small touches of Indian cuisine and kitchen make the space extra special. Malai Chicken (creamy boneless chicken made in a clay oven with ginger, garlic, cream cheese, coriander stem, and cardamon), Lassoni Tangri Kebab (tender chicken thighs, preparation with flavorful garlic and cooked in a tandoor), and a variety of other exquisite delicacies are served. The seafood section comprises mouth-watering fish items like the Fish Ajwaini Tikka (Bhetki cubes with hot spices and finished in tandoor), Tandoori Pomfret (Whole pomfret rubbed with lemon juice and grilled with an amalgamation of spices) and others. Also, no meal is complete without desserts! Masala 21 has a wide array of desserts like Firni, Gulab Jamun, Hot Brownie with Ice Cream and many others, which are sure to bring smiles to the faces of the customers. Masala 21 also serves its customers with beverages like Fresh Lime Soda, Soft drinks, Masala soda, and many more.Â
The concept behind naming the brand is very captivating. The owners wanted something which resonated with Indian cuisine. Hence the term, âMasalaâ. And it is 21 because; there are a total of 21 spices, the year 20â21â and lastly 21 is the duoâs lucky number.
Like the interior and the brand name, the restaurant too focuses on its food menu widely. The food served here is quintessentially Indian. If you want to indulge in some soul foods, then make sure to visit this place as they have a wide range of menus starting from chicken tandoori to countless types of kebabs and biryani.
Apart from the must-have dishes, âAt Masala 21, we found some renowned dishes from other parts of India and created a diverse food menu. We have unique dishes like Chicken Ghee roast from South India, Gobi 65 from Bangalore, Butter Chicken from Delhi and Prawn Koliwada, which is very famous in Mumbai. The place is absolutely the entire India in a nutshell,â said Ms. Priyadarshini Hakim, founder of Masala 21, Kolkata.Â
