“Tribe Cafe has always believed In hosting different kinds of sessions where we can always learn something new. The impact of ‘A Holy Conspiracy’ has been visible on people, the film has also received many accolades in various prestigious film festivals, we decided to invite the Director Saibal Mitra and other cast members of the movie for a talk and share this with our patrons. We feel honoured to share the platform at TRIBE, with some of the most talented and empowered personalities from the city.” said Shilpa Chakraborty, Co-Owner, Tribe Cafe.
Starring two powerhouse performers Naseeruddin Shah and the late Soumitra Chattopadhyay in pivotal roles, A Holy Conspiracy is based on the famous play Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.The film – A Holy Conspiracy, is an engaging courtroom drama between science and religion, played by Soumitra Chatterjee and Naseeruddin Shah, it’s about an individual’s ‘right to think’.
Present on the occasion, Director Saibal Mitra said, “A Holy conspiracy was completed just before the pandemic started. And we had to wait for two and half years to release it. When I texted Naseeruddin Shah, he texted and told me to come to Mumbai with the script. I said yes, I am coming. After translating the script from Bangla to English, I went to meet him. The actor didn’t know me but still decided to go forward with the movie because of the storyline and that is really commendable. Two things really attracted him one was the storyline and the second was working with the late Soumitra Chatterjee. When I went to Soumitra Chatterjee, he was really surprised and happy that Nasseruddin Shah had said yes. It is really amazing to see that Soumitra Chatterjee at that age had a busy schedule. He was a great intellectual and when he was on sets it never felt that he was such a senior actor. Rather it always felt that he was like a friend on the sets. The day when Naseerji and Soumitrada met on the floors, we saw how the two legends of Indian cinema revered and loved each other. During the shoot of ‘A Holy Conspiracy’, legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah would wait patiently on the sets to give dialogue cues to his co-actor and icon Soumitra Chatterjee. ”
Remembering the shooting days, discussions were made that Soumitra Chatterjee was extremely unwell, he had a nurs with him always. He had to work for 4 hours only. But the dedication and the excitement with which he shot the film was unbelievable. Naseeruddin Shah, on the other hand, was extremely well prepared for his part. He made sure people acting with him do not get intimidated by him, so he rehearsed with each one he had a long scene with. Between the shoot the other cast members got to interact with him a lot. And he was surprisingly gentle and warm.So after working with these stalwarts it is more and more evident that how much dedication and love and practice towards one’s craft made them excel in the field and sustain for so many years.Working with them was a great experience and learning. It was a give-and-take process.
There was a lot of discipline and the cast always came on time. Even with a superstar like Naseeruddin Shah and Soumitra Chatterjee, would be on the set on time. There was no overtime as such, everyone worked as a team, always being together.
Talking about this movie and how difficult it was to enact a specific scene, Actress Amrita Chatterjee said, “Someone told me that Naseeruddin Shah is very particular with what he wants. I feel that’s a great quality to have as an actor to know what you want and how to do it. Naseerji being Naseerji, he will be on the floor throughout and he will see what everyone is doing.” ( Laughs). The scene was difficult and I had to go to the floor with the scene and the emotion. It was really an amazing opportunity working with both the legendary actors. I was nervous but learned a lot.”
The session concluded on the thought that young actors can learn a lot about what movie acting is. The movie talks about harmony and the brotherhood of India. A country of many colors, beliefs, and thoughts.
